Arts on Main was built from 5 consolidated warehouses. In 2008, Propertuity acquired the premises and began the redevelopment of the space into a hub for the creative community in Johannesburg. Arts on Main is Propertuity’s first development project and its success propelled the company to develop the surrounding neighbourhood of Maboneng.
The original warehouses are the influence for the industrial style of the refurbished building. Large factory style windows open onto spaces with high volumes and light streaming in. The original raw brickwork on the facade shares the history of the buildings, celebrating its industrial past and hints at the new future.
Arts on Main is a blend of creative, office, gallery and retail space. It brings together some of the best of Johannesburg’s art, artists, eateries and urban office space and has housed the working studios of some of the country’s most prolific artists including William Kentridge, Mikhael Subotzky and Kim Lieberman.
Arts on Main hosts the popular Market On Main, a weekly market that trades in quality regional foods and local design, every Sunday and the first Thursday of every month. The goal of the market is to promote inner city lifestyle, and provide a relaxed and creative space for makers to trade, and for locals and visitors to spend their weekend leisure time.
